John Hennigan was enrolled as a geologist in college but soon changed his mind to attend the wrestling school or what is called Supreme Pro Wrestling School. He eventually managed to enter Tough Enough, a World Wrestling Entertainment reality show. He and a fellow wrestler won a contract to star in WWE shows and he was told to train in Ohio Valley Wrestling. He finally made his debut in World Wrestling Entertainment show RAW where he was initially named Johnny Blaze. His name was changed to Johnny Spade until he was finally fixed on Johnny Nitro.

Johnny Nitro theme music was the Monday Nitro music that was constantly played as Johnny Nitro entrance music. He was supposedly fired (part of the gimmick) from RAW because he could not defeat Eugene in a match. He returned to Ohio Valley Wrestling and eventually started a feud with his former tag teammate Matt Cappotelli. He then partnered with his ex-girlfriend and Joey Mercury to for a formidable team that was well known in the Ohio Valley Wrestling. The three of them formed MNM wrestling group that dominated Ohio Valley Wrestling and they were called to join other professional wrestlers in Smackdown. During his career as Johnny Nitro, he managed to get involved with several personalities, whether friendly or hostile. He trained, Kevin Federline, estranged husband of Britney Spears, to wrestle in a match with John Cena. He regularly fought matches with his nemesis the Hardyz and other professional wrestlers under the MNM name or as a solo wrestler. When Mercury was released from his contract with World Wrestling Entertainment their threesome disbanded. Johnny Nitro was drafted to wrestle in the ECW brand. In ECW, he debuted with a win over Nunzio and he also took over a match for Chris Benoit for the ECW World Championship. Johnny Nitro won the match and he became the world champion.
