He started off his wrestling career in 1987 in World Organization of Wrestling (WOW). He then moved on to Smoky Mountain Wrestling in the early 90s. He had a few successes and had a few matches during this period.

Holly got into the WWF (World Wrestling Federation) in 1994. He started off as a roughed up guy and went on to win the tag team gold with partner 1-2-3 kid. He then had a number of memorable matches with a lot of superstars then and got popular. Some of the most popular superstars he feuded with include Jeff Jarrett, The Big Show, and Kurt Angle. All these matches showcased the ability of Holly as a wrestler and made him look like a tough guy that he is.
Holly then moved to the SmackDown brand of WWE and started out as a heel that is considered a bad wrestler who would do anything to win in a match. He developed a short time feud with young superstar Randy Orton and had a few good matches. Hardcore Holly is one of the few wrestlers who are loved and hated by different sections of the fans equally. While he is loved for his adventurous fights and competitive matches against his opponents, some wrestling fans don’t like his stiff behavior during the matches. An example of this incident is the match with Brock Lesnar. During the match, Holly didn’t coordinate with Brock and landed on his head during a move. This caused him a severe neck injury and he was forced out of action for several months. He then went on to have matches with Orlando Jordan, Mr. Kennedy, Billy Gun, Charlie Haas, and many others.

During a match with Rob Van Dam, his back was torn and blood gushed out like anything, but he still went on to finish the match amid great cheers from the fans.
