He started his career as a stylish wrestler in Yoshiaki Fujiwara's Fujiwara Gumi promotion. After that he jumped into its BattlARTS, successor promotion, but Funaki likes the style of lucha libre very much, so he jumped to the Michinoku expert Wrestling, Great Sasuke's promotion.

He mostly wrestled as one of the player in his tag team with Kai En Tai and also involved with Taka Michinoku in his career. After his partner Michinoku left the World Wrestling Entertainment, he started as a subordinate wrestler and accepted the Number one Smack down’s Announcer involving in the backstage interviews during the different matches at WWE in Armageddon 2004, there Funaki conquered Spike Dudley and won his first Championship of WWE Cruiserweight division.
